The perfect partner for timber windows

The demand for the use of timber in housing projects has been recently revived due to architects, builders, the local authority and homeowners starting to fully appreciate its low carbon footprint, aesthetic appeal and environmental credentials.

Although the revival is welcomed, the increase in eco conscience has revealed a gap in the market for an eco beading frame system to compliment the popular eco friendly timber window. Performance Doorset Solutions (PDS) noted this pitfall in their own product offering and immediately set upon developing a highly efficient product to be used alongside their timber windows.

Product Development

PDS worked alongside long established supplier, Quantum Profile Systems LTD, to develop a high performance bead system that was as equally environmentally friendly and respectful to its surrounding areas as the timber window.  

“As always PDS wanted to develop a product that could be adapted to suit requirements for both bespoke and standard projects, was environmentally friendly and was sympathetic in design to its surroundings when in situ,” said Tim Fairley, PDS’s Managing Director. “The product development of the composite beading system took 6 months, and as with all our products, undertook rigorous security tests, such as being used in a BS7950 attack test and is Secured by Design accredited.”

The Product

The result was an engineered timber composite pinless glazing bead system and bonded bar made from recycled wood dust and PVC – U. This offers an extremely stable and high performing alternative to traditional timber components.

“Traditionally the first place to rot on a wooden window is the bead, which when using composite as an alternative to timber, is eradicated,” explains Fairley. “Due to the design of the system and the nature of the materials used, the inherent issues of timber bonded bars not adhering to the glass units are all but removed, along with the need to pin and fill glazing bars when glazing. The result is a consistently stable product which enables the use of gasket glazing which produces excellent sight lines whilst retaining the appeal of timber.”

Eco Friendly Product

Q Wood is a rigid profile extrusion of PVC blended with wood fibres. The wood used is derived from enduring forestry of new spruce and beech wood fibres which are sourced from sustained PEFC certified forest stands. Q-Wood profiles reflect the natural appearance and feel of wood whilst still retaining the beneficial properties of PVC.

PDS’s design is environmentally friendly and produces a low carbon footprint during its manufacture. As with all of PDS’s products the composite beading system can be utilised in standard and bespoke projects.

The result

“The product is designed to look like timber and enhance the appearance of a timber window without compromising the traditional design and the need to replace rotten glazing beads in the future is totally removed,” said Tim. “The full advantages of timber windows can now be fully appreciated.”
